Baby Prams

The original Great British infant travel system was the perambulator, or ‘pram’. These were large and bulky pieces of engineering. They were specifically designed for babies from birth because of the horizontal lying position. They were popular in Britain from the Victorian era onwards when suspension was added. However later, the carrycot became popular as a more versatile and lighter-weight alternative. The carrycot had a detachable body that, in later years could also be used as a car seat. The carrycot is to this day, still one of the most popular infant travel systems. There is also the, often even lighter weight, pushchair designed for infants up to 3 years old who are able to sit up and support their own neck.

Another variety of child transportation device is on-the-body carriers. Popular throughout history in Eastern and African cultures. These can include slings, backpack and hip carriers and are now becoming increasing popular in this country with the emerging social group of ‘yummy mummies’.
